Why Racha Is the Snorkeler's Choice

Racha Yai (also written Raya Yai) sits about 35 km south of Chalong, outside the main tourism corridor. It doesn't have the brand recognition of Phi Phi or the convenience of Coral Island, which is precisely why the reef is in better condition and the bays don't fill up with longtail boats by 10am. The water clarity on a calm day is genuinely exceptional — visibility of 15–20m is common in the main bays, and the coral coverage on the headlands is the best you'll find within a half-day trip of Phuket.

There are two Racha Islands: Racha Yai (the large one with three main bays) and Racha Noi (further south, no facilities, strong currents — a technical dive site). Private charters go to Racha Yai. Racha Noi is occasionally visited by experienced divers only.

Ao Siam — The Best Bay on the Island

Ao Siam is on the northern side of Racha Yai and has the best snorkeling. The bay is sheltered, the entry is easy from the beach, and the reef along the southern headland has hard coral, schools of reef fish, and occasional sea turtles. Depth ranges from 2m close in to about 10m at the headland edge — comfortable for snorkelers of all abilities. On a private charter, you can anchor your speedboat off the headland and snorkel in an area most tour boats don't reach.

Ao Batok

Ao Batok is on the southern end of the island and is calmer in the morning (it's sheltered from the prevailing northeasterly in high season). The snorkeling is slightly less spectacular than Ao Siam but the beach is longer and the water is clear enough. This is a good secondary stop after spending the morning at Ao Siam — your captain can work out the best order based on wind direction on the day.

Ao Kon Kare

The smallest of the main bays, on the western side. Worth a brief stop if conditions are right — coral formations along the reef edge are in good shape and there are almost never other boats here. Don't expect facilities: no beach chairs, no restaurants, no anything. Bring your own water and food if you want to spend time here.

Why It's Less Crowded Than Coral Island

Coral Island (Koh Hey) is only 9 km from Chalong — every longtail and tour boat in Phuket can run there easily. Racha is 35 km, which means longer travel time and higher fuel cost, filtering out the cheapest mass-market operators. The island also has limited landing infrastructure — no piers for large ferry-style boats — so it stays the domain of speedboats and private charters. You'll share the bay with dive boats (Racha has good scuba too) but rarely with the flotillas of longtails that choke Coral Island's beaches by mid-morning.

Best For Serious Snorkelers

If snorkeling is the primary reason you're chartering a boat — not the photo, not the beach bar, not the Instagram spot — Racha is the right destination. The reef around the headlands of Ao Siam and Ao Kon Kare has visibility and marine life that regularly surprises people who've snorkeled all over Southeast Asia. Bring your own mask if you have one; the fit makes a real difference in visibility.

Check sea conditions: Racha sits more exposed than Coral Island. In the high season the crossing is almost always comfortable, but in May and October (shoulder months) the seas can pick up quickly. Your charter captain will know — don't push it in marginal conditions, as an uncomfortable 75-minute return in a speedboat is genuinely unpleasant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — Racha Yai is one of the main day-dive sites from Phuket. The diving is at 5–30m depth around the headlands and offshore pinnacles. If some of your group want to dive and others snorkel, a private charter to Racha accommodates both easily. Dive equipment needs to be arranged separately with a dive operator unless your charter specifically includes it.

Yes, a morning half-day works well — depart at 7am, spend 3 hours at Ao Siam, return by 1pm. It doesn't use up a full day and the transit time is manageable. Afternoon half-days are less ideal because afternoon winds can make the return rougher and the light is harsher for snorkeling. Most operators offer a morning-only rate that's around 60–65% of the full-day price.

It depends on the children's ages and the sea conditions. The crossing is 45–75 minutes on open water, which is fine for most children over 5 in calm high-season conditions. The bays are sheltered once you arrive. The issue is facilities — there are no beach facilities for small children, no showers, very limited shade. For children under 4 or groups with babies, Coral Island (20 minutes away with beach facilities) is easier to manage. Racha is better for families where the children actually snorkel.

There is one small resort (Racha Resort) with a restaurant, but it's primarily for overnight guests and not set up for arriving charter groups. Practical advice: bring your own food and drinks, or arrange for your charter to supply lunch. Most speedboat operators will include water and fruit; catamaran operators often prepare a full onboard meal. Don't count on eating on the island itself.

November through April is the high season and the calmest water. Visibility peaks in January–March when the northeast monsoon keeps the sky clear and the bay settled. December and January are the best months overall. The transition months of May and October are variable — you can have perfect days, but also rough ones. June through September the Andaman sees regular southwest swells and most operators suspend the Racha route.
