Best Islands Near Phuket to Visit by Private Boat

Six destinations compared honestly — travel time, snorkeling quality, crowd levels, and a frank verdict on who each island actually suits.

Phuket's position at the top of the Malay Peninsula puts a remarkable number of islands within reach of a single day's boating. The nearest are less than 30 minutes from Chalong Pier. The furthest — Phi Phi and the outer Phang Nga karsts — are 45–90 minutes away but reward the journey with scenery and snorkeling that is hard to match anywhere in Asia.

What this guide does not do is tell you every island is equally great. They are not. The differences in water clarity, crowd pressure, and practical accessibility vary enormously — and some islands that appear on every tourist list are genuinely disappointing on closer inspection. What follows is an honest comparison of six destinations based on the factors that actually matter when you are planning a private charter day.

Island Comparison

1
Coral Island (Koh Hey)
Distance
~10 km
Travel Time

Good ★★★★

Good ★★★

Coral Island is the closest destination to most of Phuket's hotel zones and an excellent choice for first-time charterers, families, and groups that want a straightforward beach day with solid snorkeling. The two beaches — Long Beach and Banana Beach — have clear shallow water, beach furniture, and open-air restaurants. Snorkeling in 3–6 metres of water reveals a healthy mix of hard coral and reef fish, appropriate for children and beginners.

The island is not isolated or dramatic. It gets a steady flow of day-trippers by shared ferry, which means the beaches fill up by mid-morning during peak season. A private boat allows an early arrival before the crowds and a later departure when the day-trip boats have left — this window makes a material difference to the experience.

Best for

Families with young children, first-time charters, mixed groups with non-swimmers, anyone who wants a reliable beach day close to Phuket.

2
Khai Islands (Koh Khai Nok, Nai, Nui)
Distance
~8–12 km
Travel Time
15–25 min
Snorkeling
Very Good ★★★★
Crowd Level
Moderate–High
Family Rating
Excellent

Good ★★★

The three Khai Islands sit close together on the east side of Phuket, each with different character. Koh Khai Nok is the largest and busiest, with beach bars and equipment rental. Koh Khai Nai is quieter, with a long beach and better snorkeling just off the sand. Koh Khai Nui is the smallest and least visited, often a calm anchorage point. A private charter can move between all three in a single day — something shared tours cannot do.

Snorkeling quality at the Khai Islands, particularly off the south end of Khai Nai, is among the most accessible good reef in the region. Visibility is typically 8–12 metres, the water depth suitable for children (3–5 m at most snorkel spots), and the coral healthy enough to hold a variety of fish. This is also one of the best locations for first-time snorkelers given the calm, sheltered conditions.

Best for

Snorkeling-focused groups, families wanting multiple stops, anyone with limited time (half-day charters work well here), and groups combining this with Coral Island.

3
Maiton Island (Ko Mai Thon)
Distance
~15 km
Travel Time
25–40 min
Snorkeling
Good ★★★
Crowd Level
Very Low
Family Rating
Very Good
Photography
Very Good ★★★★

Maiton Island is privately owned and managed as a boutique resort — which means it receives almost no shared-tour traffic and the beaches are consistently uncrowded. Private charter guests can use the island's facilities (beach chairs, bar, restaurant) for a fee, or anchor off the beach and use the boat as a base. Either way, this is one of the quietest day-trip experiences accessible from Phuket.

The island itself is lush and attractive, with a well-maintained beach and clear water. Snorkeling is good in calm conditions but the reef is modest compared to Racha Yai. The primary advantage here is atmosphere: on most days you will have the visible beach almost entirely to yourselves, which is increasingly rare in this part of the Andaman.

Best for

Couples, small groups wanting a quiet day, honeymooners, anyone who values low crowds above maximum snorkeling quality.

4
Racha Yai (Raya Island)
Distance
~25 km
Travel Time
45–90 min
Snorkeling
Excellent ★★★★★
Crowd Level
Low–Moderate
Family Rating
Very Good (7+)
Photography
Excellent ★★★★★

Racha Yai is the best snorkeling destination accessible from Phuket in a single day. The water clarity — 15–20 metres of visibility in dry season — is exceptional, and the coral at the southern bays (Bay 2 and Bay 3) is among the healthiest in the Andaman. The beach at Bay 1 is wide, white, and calm enough for non-swimmers to enjoy the shallows. Reef sharks, turtles, and a wide variety of hard and soft coral are regular sightings in good conditions.

The 45-minute crossing from Chalong by speedboat (or 90 minutes by catamaran) means Racha Yai demands a full-day commitment. The distance also keeps shared-tour numbers slightly lower than Phi Phi or the Khai Islands — the island feels quieter than its quality would suggest.

Best for

Snorkeling enthusiasts, underwater photographers, groups wanting the best water quality available from Phuket, and families with children aged 7 and up who can snorkel independently.

5
Phi Phi Islands
Distance
~45 km
Travel Time
45 min (speed)
Snorkeling
Very Good ★★★★
Crowd Level
High
Family Rating
Moderate (8+)

Outstanding ★★★★★

Phi Phi Leh — the uninhabited southern island of the archipelago — contains two of the most photographed marine locations in Asia: Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon. The limestone walls, turquoise water, and dramatic verticality of the setting are genuinely extraordinary. Phi Phi Don, the inhabited island, adds the snorkeling at Monkey Beach and Shark Point, plus the view from the twin bays viewpoint.

The crowd reality at Phi Phi must be stated plainly. By 10 AM in peak season, Maya Bay hosts hundreds of visitors arriving on shared ferries. A private speedboat departing Chalong at 7 AM can arrive at Maya Bay by 7:50 AM, and the difference in experience — 30 minutes nearly alone in the bay versus arriving at 11 AM into a queue — is enormous. This is one of the clearest arguments for private over shared on this specific route.

Best for

Photography-focused groups, adults wanting the iconic Andaman experience, experienced travellers who have seen other islands and want the flagship destination. Not recommended for young children due to the open-water speedboat crossing.

Phang Nga Bay
Distance
~30 km NE
Travel Time
45–75 min
Snorkeling
Poor ★
Crowd Level
Moderate
Family Rating
Very Good (8+)
Photography
Outstanding ★★★★★

Phang Nga Bay is the destination that looks completely unlike any other on this list. The bay is a shallow, calm expanse dotted with 40 limestone karst islands — vertical towers of jungle-topped rock that rise hundreds of metres from the glassy surface. Early morning, when mist settles between the karsts and the light is golden, is one of the finest photography environments in Southeast Asia.

The bay's key stops — James Bond Island, Ko Panyi floating village, and the sea caves at Koh Hong — are all accessible on a single full-day charter. The sheltered, flat water means the crossing is comfortable even for those with seasickness concerns, and the calm conditions inside the bay make it one of the more relaxed itineraries available from Phuket.

The honest caveat: do not come here for snorkeling. The bay is shallow and the water visibility is limited. There is essentially no coral diving or reef snorkeling at any of the main stops. This is an above-water experience — the geology, the villages, the sea caves. It is spectacular on its own terms; just not the same trip as Racha Yai or the Khai Islands.

Best for

Photographers, landscape and architecture enthusiasts, groups with mixed swimming ability (the calm water and above-water focus makes it accessible to all ages), families where adults want scenic variety rather than snorkeling.

How to Choose the Right Island

If snorkeling quality is the priority: Racha Yai is the clear answer for experienced snorkelers and older children. The Khai Islands are the better choice for families with younger children or beginners — shorter crossing, shallower water, gentler conditions. Phi Phi offers very good snorkeling in a more dramatic setting but with more crowding at the best spots.

If you want minimum travel time on the water: The Khai Islands and Coral Island are both reachable in under 30 minutes from Chalong. Racha Yai is worth the longer passage for the quality gain, but if your group has young children or anyone uncomfortable on open water, staying closer makes for a better day.

If crowds concern you: Maiton Island and Racha Yai (particularly the southern bays) see the lowest volumes. Phi Phi and the Khai Islands are at their busiest in peak season between 10 AM and 2 PM — a private charter that arrives early and leaves mid-afternoon substantially reduces the crowd impact even at the most popular spots.

Catamaran vs speedboat for island choice: The Khai Islands, Coral Island, Maiton, and Racha Yai are all excellent catamaran destinations — the slower pace works because the crossing is manageable. Phi Phi essentially requires a speedboat for a sensible day trip. Phang Nga Bay works well with either, though the catamaran's stability and deck space is a comfort advantage for the longer passage.
